History

The story of Orlando begins in 1838 during the Seminole Wars. The U.S. Army built ‘Fort Gatlin’ south of present-day Orlando to protect settlers from Indian attacks. By 1840, a small town had developed around the fort, named Jernigan after the Jernigan family who first settled there. Jernigan established a post office on May 30, 1850. Six years later, as more people moved north, the town changed its name to Orlando. Orlando officially became a town in 1875 with 85 residents, 22 of whom were eligible to vote. The origin of the name “Orlando” remains uncertain.
