Nestled in Lake County, Florida, Montverde is a charming town whose name translates to “green hill.” Just a short 30-minute drive from Downtown Orlando and major attractions, this cozy community offers a perfect blend of rural charm and easy access to city amenities. Covering 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), Montverde consists of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) of land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of water, making up 11.80% of its total area.

Situated on Lake Apopka’s western shore along the Lake Wales Ridge, Montverde boasts a unique landscape with rolling hills and stunning views – a rarity in Florida. This special place is a treasure trove of history, culture, archaeology, and natural wonders.

Montverde is home to five parks, a community center, baseball field, playground, tennis court, and a Town Hall with an auditorium. Residents enjoy the convenience of a volunteer Fire Department, library, Post Office, and a gas station with a convenience store. Various churches cater to different faiths. The town’s oldest structure, the historic Harper House, dates back to the mid-1870s.

History

Montverde, once an early Indian settlement, has a fascinating and rich history.

Long ago, Native Americans speaking the Timucua language lived along Lake Apopka’s shores. By the mid-18th century, the Seminoles moved in after diseases sadly wiped out many Timucua Indians. Local residents have discovered numerous Timucua artifacts around Lake Apopka’s western shore, including burial mounds and even a dugout canoe now on display at the Helen Lehmann Memorial Library in Montverde.

The first non-Native American settlers arrived in 1865, naming the area West Lake Apopka. These pioneers included John W. Harden, W.H. Porter, John Griggs, Lt. Jim Franklin, Andrew Shaw, and John W. Harden with his wife Aramenta. Later, the town was renamed “Monte Verde” due to its beautiful green hills. Montverde was officially incorporated on May 18th, 1925.

From 1887 to 1969, the Tavares and Gulf railroad served the town, primarily transporting agricultural goods. Past industries in Montverde included a cement plant, a moss processing facility for furniture, and the original Snapper Mower manufacturing plant. Grapes, citrus, and vegetables were the main crops, but unfortunately, freezes and diseases eventually put an end to these thriving industries.

Before the 1940s, Lake Apopka was a fishing paradise. People from all over flocked to its western shore, where fish camps dotted the landscape. Montverde, a small town nearby, offered cozy lodging for overnight guests. Sadly, years of pollution forced the fish camps to close. But don’t worry! One of these old fishing cabins still stands today, proudly displayed at the local library. The good news is that Lake Apopka is getting a makeover. A huge $130 million project is underway to bring the lake back to life and improve its water quality.

Fast forward to today, and Montverde has managed to keep its country charm, even as growth sprouts up all around. Just outside town, fancy neighborhoods have popped up in unincorporated Montverde and on Sugarloaf Mountain. In 2002, something special happened. The state of Florida named Montverde’s main road, CR455, and Old SR 50 as part of the Green Mountain Scenic Byway. This cool title helps protect the area’s beauty and gives it a chance to shine even more. As for Montverde itself, the town has big plans to spruce up its center while still keeping that small-town feel we all love.

Kirk Park – This shady spot has it all: a pavilion, playground, community center, tennis court, lit-up baseball field, picnic tables, and BBQ grills. Perfect for a family day out!

Truskett Park – Head to the east end of Porter Street to find this tree-filled park right on Lake Apopka.

Lake Florence Park – At the other end of Porter Street, you’ll find this park on Lake Florence’s east shore. It’s got a playground and a super long 125-foot dock.

Montverde Town Cemetery – History buffs will love this spot. It’s home to eight Confederate and one Union veteran – that’s a lot for a small Central Florida cemetery!

Montverde Day – Every November, Kirk Park hosts this fun town festival. Thousands of locals and visitors come to enjoy local art, crafts, antique cars, folk music, and flea market finds. It’s a great way to soak up the town’s friendly vibe!

Lake Apopka – Once Florida’s second-biggest lake, Lake Apopka was a fishing hotspot with fish camps lining its western shore. Sadly, a century of human activity – from digging canals to farming and city runoff – turned it into one of Florida’s most polluted lakes. About 18,000 acres were drained for farming, shrinking the lake to fourth-largest in the state. But there’s hope! The St. Johns River Water Management District is working on a big cleanup project. History in the Ground – Long ago, Native Americans called this place home. First came the Timucua, then the Seminole. Twelve special spots have been found where these folks left their mark. Some are just scattered bits and pieces, while others are burial mounds. Folks living near Lake Apopka’s west shore have found lots of cool stuff over the years.
