What is a Blooper Room?
We all want to have a perfectly designed home, don’t we? One that looks like it’s out of an Instagram dream with the most popular paint colors, upgrades in all the right places, and finishes that tie everything together. Sadly, for most of us, there’s always a space that doesn’t look quite right. It’s a space that doesn’t have a purpose and gets neglected.
In real estate, we call this awkward space a “blooper room.” The good news is, with a little creativity, you can transform your blooper room into a functional and eye-appealing area.
Let’s look at four common blooper rooms and how to turn them into your favorite spot in the house.
Odd Under Stairs Storage Area
The under-the-stairs storage area may have seemed like a good idea, but it usually ends up being an awkward, unused space in the home. If you’re a dog lover, why not turn this blooper room into a doggy dream home?
Your dog will love this private little cave. You could have shelves that hold all of your dog’s treats and food. Your dog would probably appreciate a big, comfy bed too!
Too Small Sunroom
A sunroom is supposed to be a space in the home where you can relax while reading a book on a sunny summer afternoon. Sometimes these are odd-shaped rooms that feel small and cramped – not exactly relaxing.
When it comes to blooper rooms that feel too small, you need to ask yourself – is the room too small, or do I have too much furniture? There’s no need for a large sofa in the sunroom. Instead, you could have two small but comfortable chairs with a small side table and a small rug to tie the space together. This will make the blooper room feel larger and more inviting.
Nook With No Purpose
Not sure what to do with a nook in your home? We have so many ideas! Nooks are a great place to put a small desk and install some shelves to create a workspace in your home. This can be a place where your kids do homework or where you can set up shop if you must work from home.
Another good idea for a nook is to make it a decorative storage space. You could place a cabinet in your nook that holds toys, games, or other odds and ends that don’t have a designated spot in your home. You could display artwork over the cabinet and family heirlooms like vases, candle holders, or picture frames that would otherwise sit in storage.
Bonus Room
Blooper rooms aren’t always small spaces. Many homes have a flex space which is a large, open area typically on an upstairs landing. Since these spaces tend to be wide open, there isn’t a lot of privacy, making it challenging to decide what to do with them.
We know your family would love to turn this flex space into a game room. You could get a pool table or maybe a foosball table and some casual seating where the whole family could hang out together. Are you more of an artistic type? What if you turned this space into an art gallery and painting space where you display your best work and also create new masterpieces? The key with this type of blooper room is to pick a purpose and run with it.
